Magnetic nanoparticles can 'burn' cancer cells

Among emerging cancer therapies, one approach is based on hyperthermia. In a new study, researchers show that tumor cells' specific absorption rate of destructive heat depends on the diameter of the nanoparticles and composition of the magnetic material used to deliver the heat to the tumor. from Top Technology News -- ScienceDaily https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/04/190404114521.htm

Ancient, four-legged whale with otter-like features found along the coast of Peru

Cetaceans, the group including whales and dolphins, originated in south Asia more than 50 million years ago from a small, four-legged, hoofed ancestor. Now, researchers reporting the discovery of an ancient four-legged whale -- found in 42.6-million-year-old marine sediments along the coast of Peru -- have new insight into whales' evolution and their dispersal to other parts of the world. from All Top News -- ScienceDaily https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/04/190404114455.htm

Solar wind: And the blobs just keep on coming

Scientists re-inspected 45-year-old Helios data, finding long trains of massive blobs -- like lava lamp's otherworldly bubbles, but 50 to 500 times the size of Earth -- that ooze from the sun every 90 minutes or so. from Top Technology News -- ScienceDaily https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/04/190404114437.htm

Spin lasers facilitate rapid data transfer

Engineers have developed a novel concept for rapid data transfer via optical fiber cables. In current systems, a laser transmits light signals through the cables and information is coded in the modulation of light intensity. The new system, a semiconductor spin laser, is based on a modulation of light polarization instead. The study demonstrates that spin lasers have the capacity of working at least five times as fast as the best traditional systems, while consuming only a fraction of energy. from Top Technology News -- ScienceDaily https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/04/190404094912.htm

Associating colors with vowels? Almost all of us do!

Does [a:] as in 'baa' sound more green or more red? And is [i:] as in 'beet' light or dark in color? Even though we perceive speech and color are perceived with different sensory organs, nearly everyone has an idea about what colors and vowels fit with each other. And a large number of us have a particular system for doing so. from All Top News -- ScienceDaily https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/04/190404114434.htm

Over 200 mn 4G devices sold in India in 2018: Report

The shipments of 4G devices surpassed 200 million units in India in 2018, growing by 50 per cent from 2017, and securing a market share of 64 per cent, a report by CyberMedia Research (CMR) said on Thursday. from 3g-4g - Telecom News | Latest Telecom Industry News, Information and Update: ET Telecom : ETTelecom.com https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/over-200-mn-4g-devices-sold-in-india-in-2018-report/68727835?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=ETRSS

Detecting pollution with a compact laser source

Researchers have developed a simple mid-infrared laser source that can be used to detect pollution in the air or molecules in someone's breath. Their system takes up considerably less space than the large ones typically used for such tasks. from Top Technology News -- ScienceDaily https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/04/190404094907.htm

Polysulfide donors strongly suppress inflammatory responses

Researchers have developed a new polysulfide donor that can artificially increase reactive sulfur species (chemically reactive molecules containing sulfur) in cells and tissues. Since this donor has an extremely high anti-inflammatory effect, it is believed to be an excellent candidate for a new anti-inflammatory therapy. from Top Technology News -- ScienceDaily https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/04/190404094857.htm
